How can my church help those in recovery?

Local churches can be light in their communities by offering loving spaces for people from all walks of life. If your church is looking to walk alongside those on their recovery journey, here are five ways to help:

Offer support groups or recovery meetings: Many churches have meetings that provide a safe and supportive environment for people in recovery to connect with others and work on their recovery goals. Some churches host Celebrate Recovery, AA, NA, or Al-Anon.

Provide resources and information: Churches can promote substance abuse treatment and recovery options, including information about local organizations, treatment centers, and support groups.

Offer mentorship and accountability: Many churches have programs that can provide one-on-one support and guidance to people in recovery.

Create a welcoming and inclusive environment: Churches need to create an environment that welcomes and destigmatizes recovery. A Christian community that offers support and understanding rather than judgment or stigma.

Help connect people with resources and services: Churches can help connect people in recovery with resources and services that support the recovery journey, such as substance abuse treatment, job training, or supportive housing.
