How can my church help those returning from prison?

When Jesus spoke at the synagogue in Luke 4:18 He proclaimed, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor” Freedom for the prisoner is part of God’s plan. Liberation is core to the work of the Church, here is how your church can take some basic steps to welcome and resource returning citizens.

Offer support groups or reentry meetings: Many churches have support groups or reentry meetings that provide a safe and supportive environment for people returning from prison to connect with others and work on their reintegration goals.

Provide resources and information: Churches can provide resources and information about reentry services and support, including information about local organizations that can help with job training, housing assistance, and substance abuse treatment. If you are in West Michigan, we can send you a Fresh Coast Church Resource PDF.

Offer mentorship and community: Many churches have mentor programs that can provide one-on-one support and guidance to people returning from prison. Mentoring can also lead to meaningful relationships that provide support and community.

Create a welcoming and inclusive environment: Churches need to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for people returning from prison while offering support and understanding rather than judgment or stigma.

Offer prayer and spiritual support: Many returning citizens find comfort and strength in their faith, and churches can offer prayer and spiritual support to help them connect with the Lord in meaningful ways.

Churches need to lead the way in supporting the redemption of all people.
